A misogynist is a person — nearly always a man — who hates women, or who thinks women are worth less than men and treats them that way. It is a strong word and a serious accusation. In real use it covers more than pure hatred: people call a man a misogynist when he keeps talking over women, only hires men, says women are too emotional to lead. Nobody has to feel burning hate to earn the name; the pattern of contempt is enough. The word also works as an adjective — 'misogynist jokes', 'a misogynist website' — though many writers prefer misogynistic for that job, and both are correct. You hear it most in the news, in arguments about politics and the internet, and in university writing. It is formal in shape but sharp in use, and calling someone this in public is a real charge, not a light insult. Say it when you mean it.
