Gynaecology is the branch of medicine that studies and treats illnesses that affect women, especially the parts of the body used to have a baby. It is the name of the field, not the doctor. Next door, in a way, is obstetrics — care during pregnancy and birth. In Taiwan those two often live in the same clinic, 婦產科, so everyday talk does not always split them the way the English words do. British spelling keeps ae; American spelling is gynecology. Both are the same word.
