    A misnomer is a name that is wrong for the thing it names — the name says one thing, but the thing is really something else. People almost always use it in one fixed shape: 'X is a misnomer', or 'the name X is a misnomer'. You say it when you want to stop and point out that a familiar name is . For example, a peanut is not a nut, so 'peanut' is a bit of a misnomer; the Chinese gooseberry became the kiwifruit, and neither name is really about a bird or a berry. It is a noun, and it is a slightly formal, thoughtful word — you meet it in writing, in explanations, in the middle of an article where the writer wants to be careful. It is not an insult and not really a complaint. It does not mean the name is bad or ugly; it means the name does not fit the facts. Notice too that people often it: 'something of a misnomer', 'a bit of a misnomer'. That is because names that stick are usually half-right, and the speaker is being fair about it. There is also a rarer verb, to misnomer someone, meaning to name them — you will hardly ever see it, so leave it alone.

組成mis- (wrongly, badly) + -nomer (naming), from Old French mesnomer 'to name wrongly'. The -nomer piece goes back to Latin nōmen, 'name'.
