To misfield is to handle the ball badly in a fielding game — you were meant to stop it, catch it, or throw it on, and you did not. Cricket uses it a lot; baseball and similar games can use it too, though they also have their own words (error, fumble). It can be a verb (he misfielded the ball) or a noun (a misfield cost them the run). It is about the hands and the ball in play, not about batting, and not about a bad plan. Commentators say it; players say it. Outside sport it is unusual. A misfield can be tiny (the ball bobbles) or costly (the other team scores).
