In cricket and baseball, a fielder is a player whose job is to stop or catch the ball after it is hit, and to help get batters out. In baseball, people often split them into infielders (close to the bases) and outfielders (further back); fielder can mean any of those, though pitchers and catchers are usually named separately. In cricket, almost everyone on the bowling side is a fielder, except that the and the wicket-keeper have their own names. Taiwan baseball talk will push you toward 外野手, but that is only the outfielder; a fielder is wider than that. Though actually, much older English used fielder for a person who worked in the fields, a country person. That sense has dropped out of sport English, but it is why the word looks like a farm word. The baseball sense is from the 1830s.
