To misappropriate something is to take it when people trusted you to look after it — most often money or goods at work. You already had it in your hands because of your job or your role; you were not supposed to keep it for yourself. That is why it feels different from grabbing a bag in the street. Newspapers and lawyers use this word. Everyday talk might say steal or take the money. Do not mix it with inappropriate, which only means “not suitable” — a joke can be inappropriate; only a person who was trusted can misappropriate the cash.
