To misapply something is to use it in the wrong way or for the wrong purpose. You might misapply a rule, a medicine, glue, or money. This is the doing-word; misapplication is the name of that wrong use. It is a rather formal verb. Friends are more likely to say you used it wrong. One extra : apply can also mean “ask for a job.” Misapply is almost never about sending the wrong job letter — it is about using a thing or an idea badly, not about applying for work.
