Misapplication is the name of a wrong use: you use a thing, a rule, a skill, or money in the wrong way, or for a purpose it was not meant for. It is a noun, so it points at the act or the case, not at the doing. You will hear it in school, in law, and in work reports more than at the dinner table — the misapplication of a rule, the misapplication of company money. In everyday talk people just say wrong use or they used it wrong. It is not about missing a bus; the mis- here means “badly / .”
