A misanthropist is a person who does not like other people and prefers to stay away from them. It is a person-word, not a describing word. The shorter word misanthrope means the same thing and is the one you will see more often; misanthropist just adds -ist, the ending we use for “a person who…”, like artist. It does not name a job, and it does not mean someone who goes out to hurt people. It names someone whose heart, or at least their talk, has turned against humankind. You will meet it on the page more than in speech.
