Misanthropy is not the person. It is the feeling or the way of thinking: a deep dislike of people as a group, the idea that humans are greedy, cruel, or not worth the trouble. The person who feels it is a misanthrope or a ; the describing word is misanthropic. Though actually, English speakers play with the strength. In serious talk it is a hard hate of humankind. In lighter talk someone might smile and say their misanthropy is showing when they only want a night on the sofa after a long week. The careful meaning is the hard one; the joke borrows the coat.

組成From Ancient Greek misanthrōpía: mîsos (hatred) + ánthrōpos (human). In English it also splits as miso- (hate) + -anthropy (humankind).
