When someone is misanthropic, they do not like people much and would rather keep away from them. This is stronger than shy. A shy person may like you and still feel nervous in a group; a misanthropic person looks at people and feels cold, tired, or angry at the human race. It is a describing word: a misanthropic neighbour, a misanthropic joke. You meet it more in books than in the playground. Though actually, people sometimes use it in a loose, almost funny way for anyone who skips a party and stays home — that person may only need quiet, not hate everyone. The careful meaning is the hard one: a real dislike of people as people.
