A militant person or group is willing to use strong — sometimes violent — action to get political or social change. As an adjective it describes the stance: a militant organisation, a militant wing of a party. As a noun it names the person: a militant. In news English it often means someone in an armed political group, not a regular soldier. In union and activist talk it can be less bloody: a militant is the member who wants a strike, not a quiet deal. People also stretch it in everyday speech — ‘a militant vegan’ — to mean , with no guns in sight. That looser use is real, but in headlines the harder, political sense is the default. Formal to ; not a child’s word. It is not a for military. Military belongs to the state’s army. Militant belongs to a cause.
