- 1
Merseyside is an area in the northwest of England that includes Liverpool. The name means the land beside the River . It used to be an important industrial centre with many docks — places where ships were loaded and — but most of those docks have closed. People still use Merseyside for the county-like area around Liverpool, and for the football, music, and accent they connect with that place. It is a place name, always with a capital letter, not a common noun for any riverside.
