1. 1

The Mersey is a river in northwest England. It runs through and Greater Manchester, then through Merseyside, and out into the Irish Sea. For British people the name almost always brings Liverpool to mind. In the 1960s the pop music of the Beatles and other Liverpool groups was called the Mersey sound or the Mersey beat, so the river's name also stands for that city and that music, not only for water. People still talk about the Mersey ferry, the famous boat ride across the river at Liverpool. It is a place name, so we say the Mersey.
