A maypole is a tall pole that people set up outdoors for May Day — the old spring festival at the start of May, not the workers' holiday. Dancers hold long ribbons fixed to the top and walk in and out so the ribbons wrap around the pole. It belongs to village tradition in Britain and some other parts of Europe, more than to everyday city life. You will meet it in history, folk festivals, children's books, and pictures of old village greens. Though actually, people do not dance around a maypole all through the month of May; it is tied to that one holiday. The word is simply May (the month) plus pole (a long stick). It has nothing to do with the verb may (“you may go”).
