People call clothes, a room, or a whole look matchy-matchy when every piece is the same colour or the same pattern — the shirt, the bag, the shoes, all lining up too neatly. It is not a compliment. The speaker usually thinks it looks stiff, childish, or as if someone tried too hard to “go together.” Fashion people and interior people use it a lot; it is informal, a bit jokey, and a bit sharp. Though actually, matching can be stylish: a navy coat with navy shoes can look calm and grown-up. Matchy-matchy is the version with no surprise left, when the matching is so complete it feels like a set from a shop window. Younger speakers and magazine writing use it more than old textbooks do.
