A marina is a small harbour made for pleasure boats — yachts, small sailing boats, boats people take out on weekends — not for big cargo ships. There are , places to tie the boat, and often cafés or shops nearby. It is an everyday word in coastal towns; inland students may only know it from holidays or from pictures. English took it from Italian and Spanish marina, from Latin marinus, “of the sea.” Though actually, Marina is also a woman’s name, from the same “of the sea” family (or, in some tellings, a variant of Maria). If you see Marina with a capital letter in a story, it is probably a person, not a harbour. The harbour word stays ordinary and uncapitalized unless it is part of a place name.
