A mariner is a sailor — a person who works on a ship at sea. The tidy dictionary answer is just “sailor,” and that is right; though actually mariner feels a bit old or like a word from a book. In daily talk people say sailor. You still meet mariner in stories and poems (the Ancient Mariner), and in some job language: a merchant mariner, a mariner’s licence. Older writing uses it more than young people do when they speak. It is not a Marine. A Marine (often with a capital M) is a soldier who may travel by sea; a mariner’s work is the ship and the sea itself.
