A manicurist is someone whose job is to look after the nails on people’s hands: cutting them, shaping them, pushing the skin at the base back, and often painting them so they look clean and neat. You meet this person in a salon, a spa, or a small nail shop. In everyday talk, people also say nail technician, and that person often does feet as well as hands. Though actually, a manicurist is, in the older and tidier sense, for the hands only — a is for the feet — but shops mix the words all the time, and customers almost never fuss about it. It is an ordinary job word: not fancy, not rude, and not a joke. If someone says “I’m a manicurist,” they mean that is their work, not that they merely like painting their own nails at home.
