A manicure is a treatment for the hands, especially the fingernails: cutting, shaping, cleaning, and often putting on polish. You can have one at a salon or do a simple one at home. The same word is also a verb: to manicure someone's nails. Though actually, people also say a lawn or a garden is “manicured” when it is cut very neatly — that is a picture borrowed from tidy nails, not a second kind of hand care. The word came from French manucure, from Latin manus (hand) and cura (care), so it is about hands, not about men. In Taiwan the everyday hook is 美甲, which often includes gel and pictures on the nails — a bit more “looks” than the older English idea of simple care.
