A Mancunian is someone from Manchester in England. You can also use it as an adjective: a Mancunian accent, Mancunian humour, a Mancunian band. The word does not look like Manchester, which is why students often miss it. It comes from Latin Mancunium — a name in an old Roman road-list, probably a changed form of Mamucium, the Roman fort on that spot — plus -an, on the pattern of Latin mancuniensis, “of Mancunium.” People from the city use it with pride. Though actually, there is no everyday word Manchesterian; Mancunian is the real one, even if it looks like it belongs to another place.
