    Mammy is a warm word for mother, used especially in Ireland — close to mam or mum. Children say it, and many adults still say “my mammy” without sounding there. It is familiar and loving, not formal. It comes from mam or mamma plus a little -y ending, the same kind of ending as daddy. Though actually, the same spelling is famous in the United States for a very different, painful meaning: an old racist picture of a Black woman made to cook and care for a white family. That US use is not the Irish word for mother, and it is not a cute nickname. For this entry, think Ireland: mammy = mother.
