In Scotland and the north of England, mam is the ordinary family word for mother — the one you call out when you want her, the one you use at home. Further south in England people more often say mum; in the US, mom. Same job, different shape. It is warm, spoken, and not for formal writing: a child says “Where’s me mam?”, not a form. You will also hear it from adults talking about their own mother, with the same northern or Scottish colour. It is not ma’am (the polite “madam”); it only looks close on the page.

組成A short, everyday clipping of mama. Scots has long had mam (older Scots mame “mother”, and mamye “wet nurse”), and it sits beside Frisian mother-words such as mem. It may also have been kept or coloured by older Celtic speech in Britain, but that is only a possibility.
