Maliciously tells you how someone did a thing: in a very , cruel way, and on purpose — they meant to upset or hurt. It is the adverb that belongs with malicious. You put it with a verb: spread a story maliciously, smile maliciously, damage something maliciously. The feeling is the same as malicious, only now it describes the action, not the person or the thing. It is a serious, slightly formal word. Though actually, in everyday talk people often just say on purpose or to be mean; maliciously turns up more in news, school writing, and law, where you need to say the harm was intended.
