A malcontent is someone who is not happy with the way things are set up and is likely to cause trouble about it. The word carries a : the speaker does not mean a helpful critic, but a person who complains, stirs, or will not settle. You meet it more in news and in slightly formal or older writing than in everyday talk. It can be a noun (a few malcontents in the group) or an adjective (malcontent staff). It is stronger and less kind than unhappy.
