Maladjusted is mostly said of a person, often a child or teenager, who cannot settle into ordinary life with other people. The idea is not simply “naughty”: the child may fight, withdraw, or break rules because something inside is badly out of step — fear, anger, or a home that has not taught them how to belong. Teachers, social workers, and older psychology writing use it; ordinary families today more often say a child is struggling, has emotional problems, or cannot cope. It can sound cold or blaming, as if the child were a broken machine, so kind speakers now reach for softer words. You will still meet it in school reports and older books. It is not a medical name for one illness; it is a broad, rather dated label for someone whose feelings and behaviour do not fit the world around them.

組成mal- (bad, badly) + adjusted. The prefix mal- comes from Old French, from Latin malus “bad”; scholars sometimes trace that further to Proto-Indo-European *(s)mel-?, but that last step is not certain. Adjusted here means “fitted to ordinary life.”
