One way to picture a mailing list: a book of addresses that somebody keeps and goes on using. Every name on it is a person who will get a copy. The the thing once, opens the book, and the same thing goes out to all of them. What matters in the picture is not paper or screens but the three parts that never change: one message, many recipients, and a list that is kept and . That is why the everyday language around the word is all about getting on it and getting off it.

「mailing list」可以想成一本被留著、會一直拿出來用的名冊。上面每一個名字，都代表一個會收到東西的人。寄的人東西只做一次，翻開名冊，同一份就送到所有人手上。這個畫面的重點不在紙本還是螢幕，而在三個不會變的部分：一份內容、很多收件人、一份被保管起來重複使用的名單。也因為名單是「被保管的」，這個字周邊的日常說法幾乎都在講上名單和下名單。
