A listserv is a computer program that runs an email list: one address, many people. You send one message to the list, and the program copies it to everyone who has signed up, so a class, a club, or a research group can talk about one subject without adding each name by hand. Though actually, LISTSERV began as one company’s product — a proper name, often written in capital letters. People then used listserv the way some people use a brand name for any similar tool. Younger people may never say it; they use group chats or just “mailing list.” You will still meet it in universities, older offices, and academic mail.
