1. 1

Macroprudential describes rules and watchfulness that try to keep a whole financial system safe — all the banks, markets, and flows of money together — not just one bank on its own. If one bank is careless, that can stay a small problem. If many banks make the same risky move, the whole country can get hurt. Macroprudential policy is the set of tools (extra savings banks must hold, limits on wild lending, and so on) that a central bank or financial watchdog uses to stop that kind of spreading trouble. It is a specialist word from banking and regulation. You will not hear it at the dinner table; you will hear it in reports after money crises. Though actually, prudential already means “careful, looking ahead to avoid trouble”; the macro- piece tells you the care is for the system as a whole. The quieter partner is microprudential: watching one bank at a time.
