Macroeconomic is the adjective for things that belong to the big picture of money and work in a whole country, or in a large part of the world: prices in general, how many people have jobs, how much a country makes and spends, whether the economy is growing or shrinking. A macroeconomic policy is a plan by a government or a central bank for that whole system, not a plan for one shop or one family. The everyday opposite is , which looks at small pieces — one company, one market, one person’s choices. You will hear this word in news about governments and “the economy,” more than at the dinner table. Though actually, the short dictionary line that says “the study of…” names the subject; the word macroeconomic itself describes things in that subject (macroeconomic data, a macroeconomic view). The name of the study is the noun macroeconomics.
組成From macro- (“large-scale”) + economic. The economic piece goes back to Greek oikos (“house”) and nomos (“managing, law”) — first “managing a household,” later “managing a country’s wealth.”
