    Lumbar means “of the lower back.” Doctors and anatomy books use it for the five bones of the spine in that area (the lumbar vertebrae), for a lumbar support in a chair, or for a lumbar puncture — a hospital test that takes fluid from the lower spine. You almost never hear it in casual chat about ; there people say lower back. It is mainly an adjective (lumbar spine, lumbar region). As a noun, the lumbar can mean that part of the back, but will mostly meet the adjective in health class and at the clinic. The tone is technical, not everyday.
