Lumbago is pain in the lower back, the part just above the hips. It names the , not one special disease with a single cause: a pulled muscle, a day of heavy lifting, or wear in the spine can all bring it on. The word is rather old-fashioned and medical; doctors used it a great deal in the past, and you still meet it on forms and with older speakers. In ordinary talk today, most people just say lower back pain or I’ve hurt my back. It is not slang, and it is not a joke-word in the way bad back can be. A verb to lumbago was later made from the noun, but almost nobody uses it in real conversation.
