1. 1

Someone who is lovesick cannot put the person they love out of their head. They may not eat well. They may not sleep well. They replay every word. The feeling is strongest when the other person does not love them, or is far away. We also use it with a small smile — about teenagers, about pop songs, about a friend who has gone quiet because of a crush. It is not a real illness, though sick is in the word. It is the heart behaving badly because it wants one person so much. Informal, common in songs and everyday talk. You can be lovesick for a week, or for much longer.
