If you are homesick, you feel sad and out of place because you are far from home — your people, your food, your room. Children at camp feel it. Students feel it in the first weeks abroad. Though actually, you can feel homesick even when nothing “bad” has happened; a smell, a holiday on the phone, or a quiet Sunday can bring it on. Sick here does not mean you have a cold. It means your heart feels unwell. It is a common, warm word. People of all ages use it.
