noun · B2
A very small insect with no wings that lives on the hair or the skin of a person or an animal and feeds on their blood. It makes the skin itch, and it passes easily from one body to another.
A tiny wingless insect holding on to hair or skin, feeding on the blood of whoever it is riding on. It arrives without being invited, it is hard to see, and it is hard to get rid of. The other uses grow out of that one picture: the work of picking the insects off, and the name thrown at a person who lives off other people and makes them feel unclean.
Middle English lous, from Old English lūs, from Proto-Germanic *lūs; cognate with German Laus and Dutch luis. The insect meaning has stayed almost unchanged the whole way.
