A longed-for thing or event is one people have wanted very much, often for a long time — a longed-for holiday, a longed-for letter, the longed-for day of going home. It is an adjective that sits in front of a noun. You are not saying the thing itself is long; you are using the verb long, “to want badly.” After the noun we usually keep the verb: the rest they had longed for. In everyday talk many people just say they have been dying for it, or they cannot wait; longed-for sounds a little warm and , the kind of word you meet in stories and in news about reunions. It always needs that for, because in English you long for something.
組成longed (past of the verb long, “to want very much”) + for. You long for a thing; the whole phrase then sits in front of a noun as one adjective.
