Locomotion is moving from one place to another — or the power to do that. Walking, swimming, flying, crawling: all of that is locomotion. It is a school-and-science word. In ordinary talk we say movement, or how something moves. like it because they can talk about an animal’s locomotion without naming one trick: a snake’s locomotion is not a bird’s. Cells can have locomotion too, when they creep along. Machines get the word less often; we usually keep it for bodies that move themselves. Though actually the train word locomotive sits right beside it: that is the engine that pulls the train, not the moving itself. Students sometimes treat the two as the same thing. One is the going; the other is a kind of engine.
組成From French locomotion, from Latin locō (“from a place,” ablative of locus “place”) + mōtiōnem (“a moving”), from movēre (“to move”).
