Locus is a formal word for the place where something is found, or where it is strongest — the centre of it. A city can be the locus of a protest; a market can be the locus of an outbreak. Everyday English prefers place, centre, or spot. Scientists keep extra senses: in genetics, a locus is the exact spot on a chromosome where a gene sits; in maths, a locus is the set of points that fit a rule, like every point the same distance from a centre. You will meet those in textbooks more than in chat. The word was borrowed from Latin locus, “place.” Do not confuse it with , the insect — they look alike on the page and are not the same word.
