Your livelihood is how you earn the money you need to live — your job, your trade, your small shop, the work that puts food on the table. It is a slightly old, serious word. People use it when that way of earning is in danger: a new law might destroy a fisher’s livelihood; a fire can take away a family’s livelihood. It feels bigger than job. A job is a position. A livelihood is the whole means of staying alive by work. The everyday cousin is make a living. You can also say earn a livelihood.

組成From Middle English liflode, from Old English līflād (“course of life”), from līf (“life”) + lād (“course, journey”). Later it changed its look under the influence of lively and -hood. It looks like lively + -hood now, but it started as “the course of a life”.
