From Middle English literature, from Old French littérature, from Latin litteratura, from littera 'letter'.

經古法文來自拉丁文 litteratura，源自 littera「字母」。

The whole body of things people have written down. The core picture is 'writing collected together as a body' — at its most , the books and poems thought worth keeping; stretched wider, it becomes simply 'all the writing on a topic' or 'a stack of printed papers about something'.

可以想成「被寫下來、累積成一整批的文字」。最受推崇的那一端，是大家認為值得珍藏的書與詩；把畫面放寬，它就只是「某個主題下所有的書面文字」，再放寬，連一疊介紹某件事的印刷品也算。
