Prose is writing that runs on in ordinary sentences, the way people talk and the way this explanation is written — not broken into short lines and beats the way a poem is. A novel is prose. A letter is prose. The news is prose. Even the words on a medicine bottle are prose, though nobody would call them art. Poetry has verse: lines, rhythm you can tap, often rhyme. Prose is the everyday shape of language on the page. People also talk about someone's prose when they mean that person's way of writing: clear prose, heavy prose, beautiful prose. Though actually there is a slightly stretch too — if a speech 'has no poetry in it,' someone may shrug and call it mere prose, meaning it did not lift. Teachers say 'write it in prose' when they mean 'do not write a poem.' One more small truth: in a Chinese class, 散文 often means a literary essay, a crafted piece. English prose is much wider than that. It is almost all writing that is not verse.
組成From Latin prōsa ōrātiō, 'straightforward speech' — speech without the ornaments of verse. prōsa comes from pro- ('forward') + vorsus ('turned'), from vertō ('to turn').
