Lexis is all the words in a language — the word-stock, not the grammar. In a classroom it often covers single words and the ready-made phrases that travel with them. Teachers like it because vocabulary can sound like a list of items to memorise, while lexis suggests the living set of words a language actually uses. It is a and word, not a street word. It sits next to lexicon: a lexicon may be a dictionary, or the words in one person’s head; lexis is usually the words of the language as a whole. The matching adjective is lexical. You do not pluralise it in ordinary academic use (you do not say “many lexises”); you talk about the lexis of English, or a ’s lexis.
