Lexical means “to do with words” — not grammar, not spelling rules, but the words themselves: what a language has in its word-stock, and the meaning that lives inside a word. Language teachers and linguists use it constantly; you will almost never hear it in a shop. A lexical item is one piece of vocabulary. That may be a single word (cat) or a set phrase that belongs together (look after, by the way). Lexical meaning is the meaning the word carries, as against the meaning that grammar adds (past tense, plural, and so on). People also talk about a lexical decision (choosing this word rather than that one) and a ’s lexical knowledge (how many words they really command). It is a dry, classroom adjective, and it stays an adjective: the matching nouns are , lexicon, or just vocabulary.
