Legibly is the how: you write or print in a way that other people can read the letters. “Sign your name legibly” means form the letters so a teacher, a bank, or a clerk can tell what they are — not so the signature looks pretty. The same facts as legible, only this time the word sits on the verb: write legibly, print it legibly, fill it in legibly. Formal enough for a form; ordinary enough for a parent looking at homework.
