Hold one picture: a leg is one of the long parts you stand and walk on — the limb that holds your body up and carries you along. Two things about a leg drive every other meaning: it's the upright thing that holds something up (so a table or a pair of trousers has 'legs'), and it's what you cover ground with (so one stretch of a journey is a 'leg', and to 'leg it' is to run). Even 'a story has legs' borrows the second idea — it can keep going on its own.
