A left-wing person or group supports political aims on the left: more equality, more public care, and often more power for workers rather than owners. In many countries that puts them near socialists, and at the far end near communists; in everyday talk the word also covers milder positions. The name comes from the seating in the French parliament after the French Revolution: the people who wanted more change sat on the left side of the room, and the other side became right-wing. We still use that picture. You can say a left-wing party, left-wing ideas, or the left wing of a party (the more left part inside it). It can be a plain description, or, in a hostile mouth, a warning label. Though actually, a left wing is also the left side of a bird, a building, or a football team — same words, different job. Check whether the talk is about or about a side.
Left-wing 指支持偏左政治立場的人、團體或想法，重視平等與公共照顧，也常偏向勞工而不是業主。在很多國家，它靠近社會主義，極端一端則接近共產主義；日常談話裡，它也常泛指溫和一點的立場。這個用法來自法國大革命後國會的座位：想要更多改變的人坐在左邊，另一邊就成了右翼，這個畫面到今天仍在使用。
常見的句型有 「a left-wing party」、 「left-wing ideas」，以及 「the left wing of a party」（政黨裡偏左的那一派）。說的人可能只是客觀描述，也可能帶著敵意，當成負面的標籤。另外，left wing 也可以指鳥的左翼、建築的左側或足球隊的左翼，同樣的字、功能不同，要看談的是政治還是方位。
