    A vegetable with a long, thick white stem at the bottom and long flat green leaves at the top. It tastes and smells like an onion, and people usually cook it rather than eat it raw.

    leek 是歐美很常見的蔥屬蔬菜，中文叫韭蔥（市場上也寫西洋大蔥）：下半截是一根又粗又白的莖，上半截是長長扁扁的深綠色葉子，味道像洋蔥，但溫和、帶點甜。台灣最容易對錯的是韭菜——韭菜英文是 Chinese chives，細細扁扁、整根都是綠的，沒有那截粗白莖；蔥（青蔥）則是 spring onion／scallion，整根細很多，常常生的撒上去。leek 是可數名詞，所以說 a leek、two leeks；下鍋的多半是白色那截，綠葉留著熬湯。
