    In older English, a Lapp is someone from Lapland. People from there prefer Sámi or Saami, and many now treat Lapp as outdated or insulting — a name they did not choose. You will still meet it in old books, and it sits inside the place-name Lapland. If you are talking about living people, say Sámi. Learn Lapp so you can read it; do not use it of someone standing in front of you. It is not a rude swear-word, but it can still hurt, the way an old outsider’s label hurts.

組成From Swedish lapp, possibly of Finnish origin. Compare Finnish Lappi (the Finnish name for Lapland). English took the Swedish word.
