    A Laplander is a person from Lapland — that cold far-north of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia — not the place itself. The -er ending does that job, as in New Zealander. Though actually, many people from there would rather you said Sámi (or Saami), because and names built from it can sound old and . English still uses Laplander in a plain geographic way: someone who lives in, or comes from, that region. That is a little looser than the ethnic name Sámi, which names a people, not just an address. British Christmas talk is usually about Lapland the place; Laplander is about a person.
