Lapland is the far north of Europe, stretching across northern Norway, Sweden, Finland, and into Russia. It is very cold, with long dark winters. British children are often told it is the home of Santa Claus and his — that is a story-picture more than a geography lesson, though Christmas tourism there is quite real now. The people of the region are the Sámi (also spelled Saami). Older English called them , and the place-name Lapland is built from that old name. Many Sámi find rude, so if you mean the people, Sámi is the name to use. English still uses Lapland widely for the place, especially in travel and Christmas talk. It is a region, not one country: it sits across several countries’ maps.
組成From Lapp (the old English name for the Sámi) + -land (land, country). So “the land of the Lapps” — a name made by outsiders. Land here is the ordinary English word, from Middle English lond, Old English land. The Sámi’s own name for their homeland is Sápmi.
